Vegetable-tanned leather is one of the most original and highest quality forms of leather finishing. Unlike fast industrial processes, this traditional tanning method is based on vegetable tanning agents and does not require any synthetic additives. At Oberwerth, only locally sourced materials such as olive leaves, rhubarb root and regional oak are used - responsibly, traceably and in accordance with high European environmental standards.
The tanning process is complex and can take several months. But it is precisely this time that gives the leather its special quality: the pores remain open, the natural grain is visible and each hide retains its individual character. The result is a breathable, authentic material with an unmistakable feel.
Over time, vegetable-tanned leather becomes softer, gains depth and develops an elegant patina. Small traces of use can often be polished out and emphasize the natural beauty of the material. Robust, durable and full of character, it is the ideal choice for masterpieces such as the Oberwerth Signature Line.
