Protect what is important to you - in style with Oberwerth

A Nikon Z9 body costs around €5,500. A 70-200mm f/2.8 VR S comes in at around €2,700. Plus a second body, two fixed focal lengths, a teleconverter and batteries - a serious Nikon kit quickly represents €15,000 of equipment before accessories are included. This investment justifies a bag designed for long-term protection - not a nylon case that needs replacing every three years.

Leather does four things that synthetic materials can't deliver over the life of the case:

It protects without looking like protection. A Nikon body in a padded leather messenger bag looks like a professional accessory in a hotel lobby, client appointment or restaurant - in environments where a tactical-looking nylon backpack signals "tourist" or "on the go". For working Nikon photographers whose bag is visible in client-facing work, it makes a difference.

It absorbs shock through material density, not just foam. Full-grain leather has a structural rigidity that synthetic cases can only achieve with extensive padding. The result: a bag that protects comparable gear with less overall weight than many nylon alternatives - something photographers often only realize after a day of carrying both bags.

It develops a patina. Vegetable tanned leather develops a patina exactly where you touch and use the bag. A wedding photographer will see different signs of wear than a wildlife photographer. The bag becomes identifiable as yours - in a way that a mass-produced synthetic bag never will.

It is repairable. A leather bag with a broken zipper can be restitched; a damaged strap can be replaced. Most premium nylon bags are effectively disposable products after a major seam defect. For this reason, Oberwerth offers a lifetime guarantee on the craftsmanship - the products are designed to be maintained, not replaced.

Leather Camera Bags Guide

According to Nikon system

Nikon Zf (Retro-Vollformat-spiegellos)

The Zf occupies its own position in the Nikon portfolio - retro-styled dial-heavy body that deserves a bag to match its aesthetic. The wheel arrangement and textured body panels are part of the Zf's appeal, making a premium leather bag a natural addition - not an afterthought. See the dedicated section below for Zf-specific recommendations.

Compact-Z (Zfc, Z50, Z30)

APS-C Z bodies are the smallest Nikon system currently in production. They fit comfortably into the most compact Oberwerth shoulder bags - Freiburg or Harry & Sally - with 1-2 Z-DX lenses. For street photography, a compact sling works particularly well with these bodies.

Nikon Z9

The Z9 is Nikon's flagship pro body - integrated grip, weather protection and dimensions closer to a D6 than a Z7. Factor in a bag with pro body depth. Richard 2 for shoulder bag preference; Backpack Everest when carrying the Z9 with a 70-200mm f/2.8 VR S or a 400mm f/4.5.

Nikon Z8

The Z8 delivers Z9 capabilities in a smaller body - no integrated grip, closer to the Z7 footprint. Fits comfortably in the Richard 2, and for photographers carrying a single body with 2-3 lenses, the Little William works well. Backpack users should consider the Matterhorn 14" or Everest 16" depending on kit size.

Nikon Zf

The Zf body is unique in the current Nikon portfolio - the retro styling and open dial arrangement make a half case worthwhile for body protection, and the body itself fits easily into the Edward or Little William with a 40mm f/2 or 50mm f/1.8. Zf photographers often prefer the Hydro leathers for their lotus effect water repellency and aesthetic consistency with the classic design language of the body.

Nikon D850

Still one of the most capable DSLRs ever built. The SL Bag Xtra Large fits the D850 with battery grip plus 2-3 lenses; the Richard 2 handles the D850 with a 70-200mm f/2.8E VR attached. For wildlife photographers carrying the D850 with a 500mm f/5.6 PF, step up to the Backpack Everest.

Nikon Z6 III / Z7 II

Standard full-frame Z-bodies - no handle, compact footprint. Little William is the standard recommendation for most Z6/Z7 workflows (body + 2-3 lenses). For photographers with a 70-200mm f/2.8 S or 100-400mm VR S, step up to the Richard 2.

Nikon Z50 / Zfc / Z30

APS-C Z-bodies are small enough that the most compact Oberwerth bags work well. Freiburg or Edward with 1-2 Z-DX lenses. For Zfc photographers who prefer the retro aesthetic, the vintage leathers match the classic design of the body.

Ältere Nikon-DSLRs (D7500, D5600, D3500)

Compact consumer DSLRs fit into the Freiburg or Edward with a kit zoom attached. The choice of bag here depends less on volume and more on the stylistic fit with the photographer's preferences.

According to purpose

Wildlife photography with Nikon

Wildlife photographers demand two things from a bag: quick access and protection for telephoto glass. The Backpack Everest or Backpack Rocky Mountain holds a Z8 or Z9 with a 500mm f/5.6 PF, 600mm f/6.3 PF or 400mm f/4.5 S attached. Adjustable CORDURA® dividers allow the telephoto to travel horizontally on hikes and be quickly gripped by the top panel.

For photographers working from a hide or vehicle, a larger shoulder bag like the Richard 2 allows lens changes without unloading from a backpack.

Sports photography with Nikon

Z9 and Z8 dominate the Nikon sports portfolio, typically with 70-200mm f/2.8 VR S and a second body with 24-70mm f/2.8 S or 400mm f/2.8 TC. The Everest or Rocky Mountain backpack is the most common choice - it holds both bodies with lenses attached and protects during movement on the sidelines.

Wedding photography with Nikon

Wedding photographers actively carry two bodies during a 10-12 hour day. The standard setup is dual Z8/Z9 with 24-70mm f/2.8 S and 70-200mm f/2.8 VR S. The Richard 2 fits this workflow for photographers who prefer a shoulder bag they can access during the shoot; for photographers working out of a backpack between scenes, the Matterhorn 14" or Everest 16" stores the full kit plus a laptop for on-location image transfer.

Travel photography with Nikon

Compact Z-Bodies (Z6, Z7, Zf) travel well in a Harry & Sally or a Little William. For mixed travel+business, the Munich offers a laptop/tablet compartment. Airport-compliant dimensions of most Oberwerth shoulder bags mean that the bag can travel as personal hand luggage without any problems.

Street photography with Nikon

The Zf, Zfc and Z6/Z7 with a 28mm or 35mm fixed focal length are the natural Nikon street kit. A sling or compact shoulder bag keeps the camera accessible without announcing itself. Harry & Sally in the Hydro or Vintage leather version goes particularly well with the retro-styled Zf.

Night and astrophotography with Nikon

Night photographers carry tripod accessories, headlamps and more cables than average. A bag with a front organizer pocket (Little William, Munich, Matterhorn) copes with this better than a minimal shoulder bag. The water repellency of the Hydro Line is all the more important here - dew is unavoidable during long night exposures.

Protect your Nikon Zf: Half Cases and the right bag

The retro styling and the dial-heavy top of the Zf are the reasons; the body is part of the aesthetics, not just a tool. The demands on protection and transportation have changed accordingly.

A half case protects what the bag cannot. Even in a padded case, the exposed dials of the Zf are susceptible to rubbing against partitions over years of use. A leather half case wraps the body under the lens bayonet and adds a layer between the camera and everything else in the bag - without blocking controls or battery/card access.

Combine the half case with a bag from the same leather line. Zf photographers tend to value visual coherence. A Half Case made of vegetable-tanned leather plus a Harry & Sally or a Little William from the same family make a coordinated set that will age together. The Vintage Line and Casual Line both work well with the Zf body.

Hydro Line for unpredictable weather with the Zf. The styling of the Zf doesn't scream "outdoor camera", but the body is weather-sealed. Photographers who use the Zf outdoors in changing conditions will benefit from the lotus-effect leather of the Hydro Line instead of the standard Casual Line.

Lens fit - what your lens requires

Camera body dimensions are easy to compare.
Lens dimensions are where photographers most often underestimate their bag
. Worth mentioning before choosing:

70-200mm f/2.8 (S-line or F-mount) requires approx. 220mm inside pocket depth with lens reversed and lens hood removed. The Richard 2 and Backpack Everest can cope with this; a Little William will not comfortably fit a 70-200mm attached.

24-70mm f/2.8 (Z or F) fits into the Little William when attached to the body. A reversed 24-70 plus body requires at least the Little William.

Fixed focal lengths (24mm, 35mm, 40mm, 50mm, 85mm) all fit into the most compact bags - Edward, Freiburg. A fixed focal length-only Zf or Z6 photographer has the full Oberwerth range at his disposal.

Super-Tele (500mm f/5.6 PF, 600mm f/6.3 PF, 400mm f/4.5, 180-600mm) only fits in Backpack Everest or Rocky Mountain. No shoulder bag in the Oberwerth range can comfortably hold a super-tele attached to the body.

Teleconverters are trivial to stow - plan for them in the accessory bag budget, not in the primary volume planning.

Typical mistakes when buying a bag for Nikon

Buy for the body without measuring the lens. A Z7 fits into a Harry & Sally. A Z7 with a 70-200mm f/2.8 S attached will not. Always size for your most commonly carried lens-to-body configuration, not just the body alone.

Underestimate battery and grip dimensions of the Z8/Z9. The integrated grip of the Z9 adds significant depth and width. The Z8 with optional MB-N12 battery grip behaves more like a Z9 than a naked Z8 in terms of pocket dimensions.

Don't separate professional DSLR and professional mirrorless thinking. A D6 and a Z9 both occupy the pro body category, but a D6 is significantly taller due to the pentaprism. A bag sizing built around "pro Nikon body" may not fit if the bag is designed for one and you are shooting the other.

Ignore the body aesthetic of the Zf . If you bought a Zf specifically for the retro look, a generic tactical bag undermines the purchase decision. The bag choice for the Zf is a style decision, not just a volume decision.

Forget the half-case option. For Leica M photographers half cases are a given - for Nikon photographers they are often overlooked. The Zf in particular, as well as the D850 or Df with the 50mm f/1.8 attached, both benefit noticeably from a half case, which a bag alone cannot replace.

Frequently asked questions

Summary

Nikon photographers have a wider choice of Oberwerth bag options than most camera systems because the current Nikon portfolio includes more body formats than many others - from the compact Z30 to the grip-bodied Z9, from the retro Zf to the substantial D850 DSLR. No single bag is right for every Nikon; the right bag depends on your specific body, your most-used lens, your intended use and your aesthetic preference.

For the majority of Z-mount photographers, Little William and Backpack Matterhorn 14" cover the working range. For Z9 and D850 professionals, Richard 2 and Backpack Everest are the standard choice. For the Zf, Harry & Sally plus a matching half case is the enthusiast setup.
